Make sure that you agree your fee before you sit.
Ask the parents what time they will be back. Make sure that they give you a
definite time, and do not accept 'we won't be late'.
Tell your parents what time you are expected back, and make sure that you have
arranged how you will get home, and that your parents are aware of this arrangement.
Arrive on time or a bit early, so that you can ask any questions and have everything
that you need to do the best job possible.
If this is the first time babysitting for a family, make sure that you know
you way around the house. Find out how appliances work if you need to use them,
such as heating, security alarms, microwaves, ovens, computers etc. Make sure
that you know how to operate door and windows locks.
Agree with the parents what food and drink you can help yourself to, and if
they mind you watching TV or video, playing music or using the computer.
Make sure that you get contact numbers for the parents. In case you are unable to contact the parents, make sure that you have at least two other contact numbers, either a friend, neighbour or relative of the family. Make a note of emergency numbers, and ensure that you know the procedure for dialling 999 or 112. It is also important that you have the full address and telephone number of the home you are sitting.
Ask where the first aid kit is, and in case of a power cut, where candles/torches
are kept
When parents return, give them an update on what happened while they were out.
Keep the line of communication open, and you will be well prepared to return
as a babysitter again!
Usually you can expect to be paid upon the parents return.
