Unfortunately, I would not recommend this childcare arrangement based on our experience. My daughter was nearly 12 months old when she started with Zoe. She had a settling-in period of several weeks, during which she was able to spend time with Zoe away from me and generally settled well. We therefore felt reassured about moving forward with the arrangement. When I returned to work, my daughter understandably found the transition to full childcare days very difficult and was very upset and cried a lot. She did not do anything wrong; she was simply struggling with separation from her parents. After only 2 days of the full-time arrangement, we were informed on a Saturday evening that Zoe would no longer be able to care for our daughter and that she could not return on the following Monday. We had not previously been told that her place was at risk or that there was a possibility the arrangement would end. We both work and had arranged our working schedules around this childcare arrangement, so receiving such short notice left us in a very difficult position and caused considerable stress. I completely understand that circumstances can change and that a childminder has to consider all the children and families in her care. However, I feel that parents should be aware that childcare arrangements can potentially end at very short notice, even after a settling-in period and after making work arrangements around the placement. Our daughter was not the cause of the situation and had simply been struggling with separation, which is why the way the arrangement ended was particularly upsetting for us. I would recommend that parents considering this minder ask very clearly about notice periods and what would happen if their child experiences significant separation difficulties before committing to the arrangement.
