I have more than 10 years of experience in clinical psychology and around 5 years in academic area as a professor in children development disciplines. In clinical area, my patients were mostly children from 5 to 12 years old, suffering from learning disabilities (dyslexia/dyscalculia) and other disorders that impair learning process as ASD and ADHD. Moved to Ireland in August and living with my family in Ennis (county Clare) where I am minding my nephew and niece (9 and 7 years old) temporarily organizing their daily activities: - Waking up and getting ready for school: being on time, preparing breakfast, getting dressed properly (considering the weather) and walking to school - Give instructions to them to fold their uniform - Prepare lunch considering their differences (the boy usually eats the school’s meal so when he arrives he gets a little snack while the girl arrives hungry) - Keep tracking of their tablet access so they watch only allowed content for their age (the girl is very smart and need supervision) - Homework hour: help the kids with their homework (the boy has Dyslexia, so he needs extra help and creativity is fundamental: for example, I used my knowledge in pedagogy and psychology to explain fraction using a plate, ketchup and mayonnaise – If I am not confident of my understanding in English, I leave the lessons for the mother to help as I prefer not to confuse the kid) - Give instructions for them to organize the school bag (their mother double check it when she arrives, as well as she checks the homework too) - Play group (outside or inside plays): usually they are allowed to have their friends home – I participate in some games like Twister, Cluedo, jump the rope and Rummikub, I help to follow instructions for Lego or I just watch them playing. - Administer dinner: (usually the mother cooks), I heat the dinner around 18h30 and wash the dishes. - Give instructions during shower: check if they are washing their privates properly (they can do it by themselves, but need supervision) - Have the kids to play with the dog for a moment everyday (the dog can’t stay inside the house) / have the dog’s bowl cleaned everyday. Usually I have to deal with some bad behaviour as wanting to play outside without proper clothes (hat, for example), watching TV with the volume too loud (remembering that the boy has Dyslexia and this has to be considered) and staying in shower playing for too long. Although my knowledge on education, I would respect family’s dynamic and make parents aware of what happened during the day as a clear communication is necessary.
